Important Information for Our International Students: What to Do if You Are Stopped by ICE

If you are an international student in the U.S., it’s important to understand your rights and responsibilities. Even if you are here legally, situations can arise, such as being stopped by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement). Knowing how to react in these situations can help things go more smoothly.

What is ICE?

ICE is the U.S. government agency responsible for enforcing immigration laws. They might check people’s immigration status. Being stopped by ICE can be intimidating, but staying calm, being prepared, and knowing how to protect yourself will help make the situation better. Here are some tips in case this happens to you:

  • Be Prepared
It’s important to always carry the proper documents with you. These documents prove that you are legally in the U.S. You should have your driver’s license, a copy of your passport, visa, I-20 form, and, if applicable, your I-797 approval letter (if you have changed your status, this letter is your approval). It’s also a good idea to have a copy of your I-94 form, which shows when you arrived in the U.S. (You can access this form here: Get your most recent I-94).
Keep these documents with you in paper form and on your phone (You can use an app such as CamScanner to scan them and save them on your device).

  • Know How to Contact Your School
If you need help, it’s essential to know your school’s contact information. At Language Systems, we recommend saving the main campus phone numbers. Always call the campus phone if you need assistance, and please avoid using cellphone numbers or personal staff numbers if you have them.

  • Here are the campus numbers:
    • DTLA Campus: 213-385-3665
    • OC Campus: 714-572-1771
    • Torrance Campus: 310-792-7770

    Keep Your Attendance Up
To stay in legal status, you must follow the rules of your visa, including attending classes regularly. Missing too many classes can cause problems with your visa. Be sure to attend class regularly.

  • Ask for Help from Your DSO
Your DSO (Designated School Official) is there to help you. They can answer any questions you have about your visa or immigration status. If you don’t understand something about your status or need assistance, talk to your DSO.

  • Stay Calm and Polite
If ICE stops you, staying calm, polite, and respectful is important. You can ask why you’re being stopped but always do so politely. Don’t argue or get angry, as this could escalate the situation. Be cooperative, and things will go more smoothly.

  • Know Your Rights
You have rights if ICE stops you. Please feel free to remain silent and request a lawyer if needed. You can ask the officer to explain if you don’t understand why you’re being stopped. If you believe your rights are violated, stay calm, document what happens, and seek legal help immediately.

Remember

International students must follow visa and country rules, such as having the necessary documents to re-enter the U.S., not engaging in activities outside the scope of their visa, and obeying traffic laws.
