Halloween in the United States: Traditions and Fun in California

Halloween is celebrated every year on October 31st in the United States. The holiday started as a mix of ancient Celtic traditions and American culture, and over time, it became a fun day for both children and adults. One of the most popular traditions is “trick-or-treating”, when children go door-to-door in their neighborhoods to collect candy. People also decorate their yards and homes; some decorations are incredibly creative, fun, scary, and impressive!

In California, Halloween is celebrated in many ways. Many adults enjoy going to bars and parties, especially at the Manhattan Beach Pier and Hermosa Beach. The most famous Halloween celebration in the Los Angeles area is on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood. The street is closed to traffic, with a parade, live shows, and a huge street party. Many people also celebrate Halloween at home, hosting private parties with friends. Costumes are often very detailed and creative, making it an unforgettable experience.

During this time, many costume stores across the city open, and they often double in number, with special pop-up shops open just for Halloween. It’s a great opportunity to find unique and creative costumes for the holiday.

For international students, experiencing Halloween in the U.S. is something really special. Language Systems International celebrates Halloween every year at all three campuses. After the school party, students often continue the celebration at other places in the city—what they call the “after”—enjoying the amazing decorations, costumes, and festive atmosphere.
